We are fired up about burning for healthy forests!
ALPFC 2009 Annual Meeting
October 18th, 2009 Filed Under Blog
The Alabama Prescribed Fire Council, ALPFC, held its annual meeting at the DCNR State Lands Division, Five Rivers Complex on the Causeway in Baldwin County on Friday, October 16. Andy Baril and the planning committee did an excellent job. There were about 100 burners in attendance. It was a good crowd. New members to the steering committee were elected. It should be a good year.
Mark Melvin, Chair, Coalition of Prescribed Fire Councils, brought the group up to date on the Council. Their web site is up and running, http://www.prescribedfire.net/ . Check out the national issues and stay informed.
The representative from ADEM advised the group of their status and issues. One of the main points was the permanent air quality monitors across the State. It was suggested that these monitors should be treated as SSA. That seems to beg the point. If prescribed fire is not an issue why worry? If we are doing our job as Certified Burn Managers there should be no problem. It was pointed out that wild fires such as the Okefeenokee fire in Georgia a couple years ago are considered a SPECIAL EVENT. A prescribed fire may be treated as a special event under some circumstances. Check it out on the Council’s site or the EPA site. Hopefully further information will be forth coming from the ALPFC
Joel Glover, Biologist, DCNR, advised the group to be cautious of exploding mules.
Hayes Brown, ESQ, attorney, talked about “Liability Considerations in Prescribed Burning”. If legal issues are a concern to you and you missed it you missed a good one. He explained the concept of liability. Maybe his presentation will be posted on the ALPFC web site, www.alpfc.org , check it out.
Doug Rigdon explained some of the issues related to prescribed fire insurance. Hopefully that presentation will be posted to the ALPFC web site.
Lunch from Dream Land was good as always.
Dr. Robert Carter talked about ticks and lime disease. He knows from personal experience.
Bill Sweet talked about “Rx Fire and Residential Housing”. We all need to spread the word to the public about FireWise.
Scott Layfield, USFS, talked about “Rx Burning Methods and Techniques” . Some of the gadgets he talked about seemed to add an exciting dimension to PB.
Dr. John Kush talked about the history of Longleaf in Alabama.
Frank Allen, Biologist, DCNR, is the new chair of the ALPFC. Frank.Allen@dcnr.alabama.gov . Share your ideas, interests, suggestions, etc. with Frank
